Are you dreaming about becoming a makeup artist and are you thinking about going to school, but is it just too expensive? Are you thinking about starting your career without a certificate? Learn if it’s even worth getting the certificate right here. Welcome back to my series Becoming a Makeup Artist where I teach you all about working as a makeup artist and how to become the makeup artist that you want to be. I really hope you enjoy it.
Certificate or no certificate?
Being a makeup artist is an amazing job and I have already told you why it’s a giving job in this post. But today I will talk more about the certificate that many makeup artists have but many also don’t have. It’s different from country to country and from brand to brand if they want a certified makeup artist or if they see your talent even though you didn’t study makeup artestry.
I will start today’s post with telling you a short version of my story. I started out working as a makeup artist without a certificate. The ad for the job said that they were looking for certified makeup artists but I applied anyway. All of the sudden I got the interview and the job and without blinking an eye, I was a working makeup artist. It felt great and it was amazing that I was doing the job that I had been dreaming about for years. 6 months after I started working as a makeup artist I got an offer that I couldn’t resist. Sephora asked me if I wanted to become a certified makeup artist and of course I said yes. So two of my girls from the store and myself journeyed to Copenhagen to become certified makeup artists. The days were long and hard and I even had a few meltdowns where I thought it wouldn’t happen, but I finished and I’m not a certified makeup artist and wow has it opened many doors.
Before becoming a certified makeup artist I thought I didn’t need it because I could prove my talent and my passion for the job in so many other ways. And I could. That’s why I got the job before getting a certificate. But. There is always a but. I never knew how much it means having someone else say that you’re good enough to become certified. That someone, in my case Sephora, gave me a paper saying that I’m a makeup artist and that I can now get jobs wherever I want. That’s even greater than the job itself.
Go follow your dreams!
I cannot guarantee that you will get a job without a certificate. You can get rejected many times but I’m saying that it’s possible if you have the talent and the passion. You can start working for free at photoshoots to get your portfolio started and to show your talent and passion.
If you know that you want to be a makeup artist and that’s what you’re meant to be, then go get yourself a certificate and get it in writing that you’re talented and good at what you’re doing. It’s a dream come true getting that certificate and it will help you to get more jobs in the future.
It’s totally up to you if you want to get a certificate or not. You will make it harder on yourself if you don’t, but it’s not impossible to have an amazing career without a certificate. Go follow your dreams! Do what feels right and do whatever it takes to follow your dreams. It will all be worth it in the end.
